Our first assignment in this program was to write a paper on someone we knew that was affected by either drugs, alcohol or both. My paper contained my Uncle Greg who just recently passed away at that time. He was struggled with alcoholism. The timing of my Uncle's death and this assignment were a strong reminder of what it can be like if drugs or alcohol are abused.
I ended up being one of the essay winners from this assignment and received a "Daren" lion. I also had to read my paper at the podium on the auditorium stage in front of the whole fifth grade, plus parents and teachers.
Then in the seventh grade, when I was in the Jr/Sr High School, I was involved with another D.A.R.E curriculum and along with a few other peers, I assisted Officer Lucas during study hall in putting together real life situations involving drugs and alcohol that could be shared with other students. It was yet another great example of my experience with D.A.R.E.
I can honestly say the D.A.R.E. Program has been a huge influence on my life and effected my past decisions and decisions yet to make. This has helped me be the person I am today.
I am so honored to have been chosen to participate on the Youth Advisory Board and I will do my best to use my skills and knowledge to help my generation and generations to come combat drugs and alcohol. |
