My name is Jennifer Rubin and I am the D.A.R.E Youth Representative for the state of Missouri. I am currently a sophomore in high school and I hope to be a Sports Broadcaster when I grow up. I am the catcher on my Softball team and I am a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan!
I first was involved with D.A.R.E in elementary school. My D.A.R.E Officer did an amazing job teaching our class and I felt like we learned a lot. Our officer loved being with us, as much as we loved being with him.
After D.A.R.E was over, my D.A.R.E. officer asked me if I wanted to volunteer at Safety Town, a program where teenagers and Police officers teach children 4-6 different safety lessons. I have been a volunteer at Safety Town for 4 years now, and it’s one of my favorite times of the year!
After being with my D.A.R.E Officer for such a long time, as well as meeting many other officers at Safety Town, I wanted to give back to them. I started a fundraiser called Rockin’ 4 Relief: to raise money and Awareness for BackStoppers. BackStoppers is a group that gives money to families of Police Officers, Fire Fighters, EMTs and Paramedics who were killed in the line of duty.
I just completed my third annual event and we have a cumulative total of over $12,000 raised. Emergency Responders risk their lives every day when they go to work, and I wanted to give back to them.
Now, I am around Police Officers all of the time, and I love being with them. I couldn’t have asked for a better group to be with. All of this started because of the impact my D.A.R.E Officer had on me.
D.A.R.E taught me a lot. The use of drugs and alcohol are 100% preventable and I would do anything to teach other people that. Some of the Police Officers I know have told me stories about kids they have arrested for drugs and alcohol and some of their stories are hard to believe. Drugs and Alcohol become dangerous quickly.
I am happy I will get to have the impact on others, that my D.A.R.E Officer had on me.
I am looking forward to a great year! |
