DARE GRADUATION ON KENAI PENINSULA
Office of the Lieutenant Governor of Alaska - January 2009

Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education Program (DARE) this month graduated 170 fifth grade students from Redoubt Elementary, Soldotna Elementary, Kalifornsky Beach Elementary, and Soldotna Montessori Charter School. Lieutenant Governor Sean Parnell spoke at the ceremony emphasizing the power of courageous friendship to influence good choices.
DARE Alaska, Inc., a cooperative effort by law enforcement, communities, schools and parents, strives for "healthy kids in healthy communities," by teaching Alaskan youth to resist drugs and violence.
The "cold-shoulder technique" teaches kids to stay away from drugs and encourages them to help their friends make smart decisions.
Officer Tony Garcia of the Soldotna Police Department is DARE's School Resource Officer on the Kenai Peninsula. Cassie Sheridan, a sophomore at Soldotna High School, is the state representative to DARE's National Advisory Board and meets with other youth representatives, as well as members of Congress, during the annual DARE conference in Virginia.
