I was first introduced to the DARE programs in fifth grade. My first DARE instructor was Detective Vallone. His enthusiasm and dedication to the DARE ideas was very impressive and is a contributing factor in why I have chosen to remain substance free.
I had a second DARE program in eighth grade where former Detective Dugan taught us further and more in-depth about the ideas of DARE. With Detective Dugan and another student, I had the privilege of attending a seminar that year in my state about youth taking action.
As I began high school, I always remained true to my beliefs about remaining substance-free. It was relatively easy for me to do so as my close-knit friends chose to live the same lifestyle as myself.
With my older sister being the DARE Youth Advisory Board member for the state of RI before myself, I had a great role model to constantly look up to. I joined my schools SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) group as a freshman. I met many great friends through my SADD group as well as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving). I have attended many events hosted by MADD RI as well as two MADD RI TeamSpirit Conferences in the summers of 2010 and 2011.
As I entered my sophomore year of high school, I was appointed the new DARE YAB member for the state of RI, succeeding my sister, Sara. This honor has introduced me further to the DARE ideas as well as many people who are working towards the same goal as me- to bring awareness about the dangers and consequences of drinking, smoking and using other illegal substances.
I attended the last YAB conference in Washington, D.C. in November of 2010. I met many individuals involved with law enforcement as well as many students from across the US who share the same ideas and beliefs as myself. I am eager to attend the conference again this year.
I am a dedicated student in school, taking interest in art classes and literature. I love to volunteer in my community and help others when I am able to. Outside of academics, I spend the majority of my time at Ichiban Karate Studio, both taking classes and working as an assistant instructor. When I am not working on school work or working at the karate studio, I enjoy kayaking, biking, spending time at the beach, and being with my good friends.
I can’t wait to see what this year has in store for me! No matter where I will go in life, I know that I will always remain substance free and true to myself.
