Alexander City, Alabama

Tournament raises money for D.A.R.E. program Program
June 22, 2005 - The Outlook

Local golfers pledged their support to help steer children away from drug and alcohol abuse by participating in the third annual D.A.R.E. Golf Tournament Wednesday.

The tournament, held at Lakewinds Golf Course, is the only fundraiser for Alexander City's D.A.R.E. program. D.A.R.E. is a nationwide prevention program that educates youth about the dangers of drugs and alcohol and encourages students to make smart decisions when confronted with peer pressure. Alexander City has participated in the program since 1990.

Alexander City Police's D.A.R.E. Officer James Orr said the goal for this year's event was to raise $4,200 for the program.

"Each year, we've managed to meet our goal and this year is no exception," he said. "Our business and community partners are what makes this event so successful and keeps our program running. Without them, this wouldn't be possible."

D.A.R.E. receives much of its funding through the United Way, so the tournament helps supplement the program's budget, allowing organizers to continue to provide educational resources to local schools. Orr said all proceeds from the golf tournament would go right back into D.A.R.E.'s operating budget to use for training and materials for future educational programs.

Thirteen four-person teams competed in the tournament, which began at 8 a.m. and lasted until 11:30 a.m. Afterwards, the scores were tallied and prizes were awarded for first, second and last place teams and individual awards were also given.

Russell Corp.'s team took home the first place award after shooting an 11-under-par 59. Team members included Wade Moore, Jerry Sanders, Billy Templin and Jim Burns.

Arrow Disposal's team shot a 9-under-par 61 to win the second place award and team members included Charles Ogles, Tom McMullen, Gerald McGill and Skipper Worthy. The last place award went to the team from CH2M HILL represented by Lu Ann Key and Luise Hardman.

Individual awards were given for the longest drive and closest to water, both won by Lu Ann Key. Kenny Goggins won an award for shooting the closest to the pin at hole No. 14.

"D.A.R.E. has always been a great program in Alex City and we're glad to do anything we can to help James and the school kids," Moore said. "And being a golf tournament makes it that much more fun to participate in."

Corporate sponsors for this year's tournament included Piggly Wiggly, N-Touch Communications, Sunflower Waste, Riverbend Convenience Store, Alexander City Department of Public Safety, Tallapoosa Ford, CH2M HILL, Arrow Waste and Russell Corp. Teams were made up individuals representing each of these organizations.

Orr said he was pleased with the turnout for Wednesday's event, especially since it was rescheduled from an earlier date due to inclement weather.

"This is just a fun event for everyone who participates," he said. "We appreciate all of our sponsors for helping to make it a success and keep our program going."
