D.A.R.E. Day for Bingham County Students

Sun and fun was the name of the game for over 900 fifth graders Tuesday.  The annual D.A.R.E. day was filled with activities and games. This year, there was a big turnout of graduates from the D.A.R.E. program.

Tuesday's the payoff from four months of hard work, a reward for completing the D.A.R.E. program.

"We teach them all drugs and ways to resist them. To prepare them for the future," said Rick Otterstrom, Bingham County Sheriff's Office Deputy.

"If we can save some of these kids from making the wrong decision, that's what we're after," said Bingham County Sheriff, Dave Johnson.

Every student learned a lot about themselves and had something to say about the program.

"I don't want my friends to do drugs. I never want my friends to do drugs," said A.J. Spidell, Stoddard Elementary School.

And, about their day.

"It's really a fun day. We got sprayed by the fire trucks," said Amanda Russell, Hazel Stuart Elementary School.

There are just so many events going on. Students said their favorite is the water balloon toss.

"We're having a lot of fun," said Steven Maughan, Hazel Stuart Elementary School.

Students from four school districts in Bingham County were rewarded for committing to stay away from drugs and violence. D.A.R.E. is a successful and important part of these students' education.

"I've run into kids from the past, and they've said, ‘I had the pressure, I remember what I learned in D.A.R.E. and am able to say no'," said Otterstrom.

"This is our future out here. You look at these 900 kids... It's what it's all about," said Sheriff Dave Johnson.
