City Police officer recognised in Queen’s Birthday Honours

PC Mark Dilliway, City of London Police, was awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for his work with DARE and local schoolchildren.
Mark’s role as a local Ward Constable in the City of London brings him into contact with all members of the community, but he has worked tirelessly to make contact with harder to reach groups in the area even setting up a police office on one of the local estates.
He worked with a colleague to set up the Emergency Information Scheme, which encourages elderly and vulnerable people to keep vital emergency and next of kin details to hand incase they are ever needed by the emergency services. This scheme was identified as excellent practice by the Chief Executive of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and spread across the UK.
Mark became a DARE trainer in 1998 and soon began teaching students from schools around the City.
He started working with the children from the Richard Cloudesley School on a weekly basis back in January 2004. The school caters for extremely ill children, who often cannot speak, and suffer from debilitating conditions such as cerebral palsy.
Working with specialist teachers, he formulated a programme to teach them about the police and staying safe in the community. Despite their learning difficulties Mark has taken them out into the City to learn about road safety and organized a trip to Wood Street Police station for them.
Working closely with the school’s expert staff, Mark conducted the DARE programme to a class of six children, all of whom graduated on Friday 9 May 2008. The children were really proud of their achievement and it was a momentous occasion for Mark.
Speaking about the MBE, Mark said:
“I’m pleased and proud to have received this award. It’s good to know that the Force is recognising the good work done by all the ward teams around the City.
“I feel both privileged and honoured to have the opportunity to work with this and all the other schools, and the students’ positive attitude towards the programme is particularly humbling. On my first visit to the Richard Cloudesley school I was extremely nervous, not knowing what to expect, but the reality was classes of children who were just as keen as any other students and wanted to learn about City Police.”
Note: The City of London is a geographically small city within Greater, London, England. It is the historic core of London. The City's boundaries have remained almost constant since the Middle Ages, and hence it is now only a tiny part of the much larger London metropolis. It is often referred to as just the City.
