The training is a cooperative effort between the US Embassy in Astana and the Ministries of Interior, Education, and Health of Kazakhstan. The team from the US is also doing public presentations in Borovoe, Karaganda, Astana, and the US Embassy in Astana.

The U.S. Embassy's Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), through its Drug Demand Reduction program, worked with the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Education to bring the DARE program to Kazakhstan, the first CIS country to adopt it.

Seven police officers and one teacher from the United States visited Astana to conduct a workshop for the twenty-nine Kazakhstani school inspectors from the Ministry of Interior. These officers will now teach the D.A.R.E. curriculum to students in their assigned schools; Kazinform refers to the U.S. Embassy in Astana.

After the practical exercises for Kazakhstani school inspectors a graduation ceremony was held at the Kazakhstan Law and Humanities University. Ambassador Ordway and Minister of Interior Kalmukhanbet Kassymov delivered remarks and presented certificates to those who completed the course.

D.A.R.E.  Signs Agreement with Bahrain to Train Police Officers

The New Year has begun with the Kingdom of Bahrain’s Interior Ministry signing an agreement with D.A.R.E. to train Bahraini police officers to teach school children about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.  D.A.R.E. will begin the four year program by providing 24 police officers with two weeks of intensive training of the D.A.R.E. curriculum.

Commenting on the agreement, Minister of Interior Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa stressed the importance of the program and urged other ministries and organizations to implement similar projects that promote awareness of such issues among the youth.

DARE's Deputy Director Mike Kuhlman said that the organization is looking forward to implementing the program in Bahrain as this is the first such initiative taken in the Middle East.

The training comes as part of DARE’s international policy of travelling around the world to instruct uniformed officers on how to spread awareness on drug and alcohol-related violence.

"The D.A.R.E. curriculum places children in different scenarios so that they can learn how to make their own choices,” Mr. Kuhlman stated. MORE...
