Malabon cops educate city students on dangers of illegal drugs

Philippines News Agency

DATELINE: MANILA

As part of its efforts in eliminating illegal drugs and drug peddlers in its area of jurisdiction, the Malabon City Police Station (MCPS) is implementing an anti-narcotic education program for students enrolled in all city-operated schools.

MCPS commander Senior Supt. Roberto C. Villanueva said that their Drug Abuse Resistance Education" (DARE) aims to inform students about the physical, moral and psychological dangers in getting hooked into drugs.

The MCPS chief also said that their "DARE" program is headed by Police Officer 3 Edgar Cabronero, a member of the city police anti-narcotic unit, and that the latter's team conducts anti-drug seminars in all of the city's public schools three times a week.

Villanueva added that the MCPS and the local Department of Education (DepEd) unit had come up with an agreement wherein "DARE" will be included in the curriculum of all elementary and high school students in the city.

He also said that students attending these anti-drug seminars will be given school credits and certificate once they complete and pass the course with "flying colors."

"Passing with flying colors means that they do not get addicted to narcotics," Villanueva further stated.

The MCPS chief also said that the "DARE" project is in-line with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's order to further involve the community in the national government's campaign against drugs.

The Northern Police District Office (NPDO) earlier announced that it will be implementing a three-pronged strategy so that the drug menace will be totally eliminated.

It said that the strategies include cracking down hard on the sources of illegal narcotics or supply reduction phase, demand crackdown and legal offensive against suspected drug pushers or peddlers.

The NPDO said the crackdown on the drug supply phase involves patient police intelligence work and coordination with other government anti-narcotics units so that the source can be nipped at the bud once and for all.

The demand reduction part will see NPDO operatives coordinating with community, business, school and church leaders so that the danger of drug abuse can be further disseminated.

The NPDO also said that this phase of the campaign will also give the NPDO the chance to brief these community leaders on how to detect drug users and whether their respective communities are infiltrated by narcotics dealers.

The last and final phase of the command's anti-narcotic campaign involves gathering of sufficient evidence and filing of appropriate charges against arrested drug dealers so that they can be put behind bars for good.

The NPDO chief is hoping that the multi-pronged strategy versus illegal narcotics will assist in the further reduction of the drug menace in his area of jurisdiction if not totally eliminating it.

The NPDO had apprehended 69 drug pushers, 413 users and 134 for possession of illegal drugs aside from confiscating some P164,952 worth of assorted narcotics last 2008.
