How the D.A.R.E. Curriculum Correlates with the California Health Challenge Standards
Los Angeles Unified School District
Health Education Programs
Rona Cole, Coordinator
The Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) curriculum is a health education program. California public schools are required to have health education during their school experience from kindergarten through high school. D.A.R.E. is an exemplary curricular program that uses an interdisciplinary trimodal delivery system. It integrates health education learning with other areas of the total curriculum.

The California health educational program for students in grades three through six involves students, staff, families, and the community. These groups should work together to promote good health, prevent health problems when possible, and address health problems in a systematic way when they do occur. Activities that foster the development of each individual's optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being, and lead to healthy choices and lifelong good health should be part of a comprehensive health program. The Health Framework for California Public Schools identifies these four unifying ideas for health literacy:

  • Acceptance of personal responsibility for lifelong health.
  • Respect for and promotion of the health of others.
  • Informed use of health-related information, products, and services.
  • An understanding of the process of growth and development.

The D.A.R.E. program teaches the first three unifying ideas of the Health Framework for California Public Schools. The content standards addressed in the D.A.R.E. curriculum requires the student to:

  • Understand ways in which his or her health and well-being can be enhanced or maintained.

  • Know about behaviors that prevent disease and speed recovery from illness.
  • Know about behaviors that reduce the risk of becoming involved in potentially dangerous situations and know how to react to situations in ways that help to protect his or her health.
  • Know how to play a positive, active role in promoting the health of his or her family.
  • Know how to promote positive health practices within the school and community, including how to cultivate positive relationships with peers.
  • Understand the variety of physical, mental, emotional and social changes that occur throughout life.
  • Identify products, services, and information that may be helpful or harmful to his or her health.

Some of the health standards are more strongly addressed than others in the D.A.R.E. curriculum.

As stated, D.A.R.E. uses an interdisciplinary approach in its curriculum format. For example, an important element in any language arts program is the integration of learning with other areas of the curriculum. The D.A.R.E. program has important applications for both the reading and the writing processes. Many of the standards for language arts are applied during the implementation of the program. In D.A.R.E., students get practice in the following established California State Standards in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.

    California State Language Arts Standards

    Reading/Literature
The student reads extensively and in depth, from a diverse collection of texts and other materials on the district's grade-level lists.

    Reading/Comprehension
The student reads, comprehends, interprets, and evaluates a wide range of materials appropriate to the grade level.

    Reading/Skills and Strategies
The student is proficient in basic reading skills and strategies and continues to develop vocabulary and fluency in reading.

    Writing/Process
The student organizes thoughts and information for writing, develops drafts, analyzes, edits and revises work as appropriate for audience and purpose.

    Writing/Communication
The student writes effectively for a variety of purposes and audiences.

    Writing/Conventions
The student uses appropriate conventions of written language, which include grammar, spelling, punctuation, language usage, capitalization, sentence structure, and paragraphing.

    Speaking and Listening
The student listens, understands, evaluates, and speaks effectively in both formal and informal situations, using the appropriate conventions of language to communicate ideas.

In addition, the D.A.R.E. curriculum, to a lesser degree, provides for the application of several other standards in social studies, mathematics, and art.

The D.A.R.E. curriculum strongly incorporates the unifying health ideas and implements them through a meaningful, student-centered approach, providing opportunities for participation, recognition, and successful achievement. D.A.R.E. is not an "extra" program. D.A.R.E. specifically meets the mandates of the Health Standards for the State of California.
