Chief Daryl gates Founder of D.A.R.E. Dies at 83

    Funeral for "America's Police Chief"

Former LAPD Chief Daryl F. Gates' funeral was held on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, in Los Angeles.

Former Deputy Chief Mike Hillman said. "He was truly America's police chief."

In the courtyard after the funeral, a rifleman discharged three volleys, as is tradition for a fallen officer. A brief peel of cathedral bells followed, and bagpipes played taps.

The LAPD airplane division flew in the "missing man" formation over the honor guard. An end-of-watch broadcast played over the speakers from LAPD communications for Daryl Francis Gates, serial number 6432, referring to him as "The Chief."

"In founding the D.A.R.E. program, Chief Daryl Gates helped ensure a better future for our children. He recognized, before most, that the long term solution to drug abuse is prevention and education. The D.A.R.E. program now benefits millions of students throughout the world each year because of the vision of Chief Gates. We have lost a leader in law enforcement and a dear friend."  Charlie Parsons, CEO and President of D.A.R.E. International.

1926-2010

Daryl F. Gates, died Friday, April 16, 2010, after a short bout with cancer.  He died at his Dana Point, California home with his family at his side.  Gates' brother said the former chief had bladder cancer.

In 1983, Chief Gates instituted the D.A.R.E. program to prevent drug abuse. D.A.R.E has been emulated by police departments across the United States and 43 other countries around the world. Since Chief Gates founded D.A.R.E. starting with only ten officers it has grown to over 50,000 officers trained and certified to teach the program, and a handful of students has multiplied to millions worldwide.

Chief Gates continued to strongly support D.A.R.E. even after retiring from LAPD.  He spoke at the California D.A.R.E. Officers Conference and attended our most recent International Training Conference in Orlando, Florida, where he presented the D.A.R.E. Lifetime Achievement Award--named in his honor.
