The Presidential Proclamation declaring April 8th as National D.A.R.E. Day is a reflection and testament of the regard in which D.A.R.E. is held. It should be noted, however, that President Obama is not the only U.S. President to have issued a proclamation praising D.A.R.E. In fact four preceding Presidents (Ronald Reagan, George Bush, Bill Clinton, and George W. Bush) during their administrations each issued an annual proclamation declaring a National D.A.R.E. Day and setting forth the reasons for such pronouncement.

For any program Presidential acknowledgment would in and of itself be sufficient appreciation for all that has been achieved and for the dedication of those responsible for the accomplishments. However, recognition of D.A.R.E. and those contributing to the success of D.A.R.E. goes beyond the Oval Office.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) in 2010 conferred coveted “partner” status upon D.A.R.E. This confirmation was based upon the long standing (1988) recognition and support of D.A.R.E. by the IACP.

In 2007 the National Sheriffs’ Association issued resolution (2007-3) in support of D.A.R.E.  The resolution, in part, states, “That the National Sheriffs’ Association urges Sheriff Offices across our nation to utilize D.A.R.E. Programs in their local communities.” 

The United Nations (UN) Economic and Social Council, during the Substantive Session of July 2009, adopted the recommendation of the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations, to grant Special consultative status to D.A.R.E. Organizations granted such status are invited to participate in international conferences called by the U.N., General Assembly special sessions, and other intergovernmental bodies.

Yes, indeed D.A.R.E. is known by the company we keep: U.S. Presidents, the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the United Nations.
