Five Moms Campaign: Stopping Cough Medicine Abuse

As a D.A.R.E. officer and a school resource officer in Reno County, Kansas, I am out every day in my community—particularly at schools—working to prevent substance abuse.

When I heard about the Five Moms Campaign, I was inspired to raise awareness about this problem among teenagers.

Cough medicine abuse is something people don’t really know about or ever think would be a problem, and I want parents to know that it can be just as dangerous and prominent as other drugs......MORE


Drug abuse trends change – DARE America responds. As the largest prevention education program in the world, we constantly listen and study what researchers tell us. Last year, members of the D.A.R.E. America Scientific Advisory Board voiced their concern with alarming increases in the abuse of prescription drugs and Over-the-Counter medicines.

We went to work. A meeting of national experts was convened at the Drug Enforcement Administration’s headquarters for the purpose of helping us focus on appropriate methods for creating specialized lessons to respond to the increasing trends of Rx and OTC abuse.

The New D.A.R.E. OTC/Rx program includes; two elementary, two middle school, one high school and one community lesson. The Officer guide includes a CD to assist instructors with the delivery of the lessons.

Also included are DVDs for Parents and High School students.  The student pamphlets are provided for students to use during classroom instruction.
