How To Start A D.A.R.E. Program

How to start a D.A.R.E. program?

Because the D.A.R.E. program is a cooperative venture between Education and Law Enforcement, it is important that both communities are in agreement regarding the implementation of the program. To demonstrate this partnership a letter signed by the Chief of Police (Chief Constable) or county sheriff and the Superintendent of Schools must be forwarded to D.A.R.E. America stating the mutual desire to implement the D.A.R.E. program and acknowledging that the program will be implemented when the police officers complete their instruction training.

What training is required for D.A.R.E. Instructors?

The D.A.R.E. Officers Training (D.O.T.) course consists of two weeks (80 hours) of preparatory instruction all Police officers must complete this training before presenting the D.A.R.E. curriculum in the classroom. Arranging for this training can be accomplished by contacting your D.A.R.E. State Coordinator or Regional Director.

What is the cost of D.A.R.E. Officers Training?

There is usually no charge for the training, however, the travel, lodging, and per diem expenses are normally paid by the requesting agency. Please note that some training centers charge a tuition fee for their training. If adequate funding is not available, alternative funding sources should be discussed with your D.A.R.E. State Coordinator.

There is no cost for D.A.R.E. America Coordinated Trainings. Tuition, lodging and meal expenses will be covered at no cost to the officer or agency. Financial assistance, in the form of a grant may be requested to apply toward travel costs associated with D.A.R.E. America Coordinated Trainings.

What is the cost of the instructor's materials?

The instructor's materials (which includes the curriculum, lesson plans, educational video and instructional charts) are furnished by D.A.R.E. America for the first year--at NO CHARGE to all instructors who successfully complete the D.A.R.E. Officers Training.

Student workbooks are furnished by D.A.R.E America for departments/communities that are implementing the D.A.R.E. program for the first time and/or are bringing back the D.A.R.E. program after a two year hiatus.

It is hoped that this information will answer all preliminary questions.
